Stuart Abel, an RN on 6C, has been a member of our Baptist team since April 2012 and works on the Oncology floor.
During a discharge survey call, a patient sang Stuart’s praises and wished him blessings for all he had done for her during her stay. Also, Stuart made a lasting impression on the life of a gentleman whose wife passed away of Stage 4 metastatic cancer. He wrote, “The nurse was exceptional in giving care for my wife and at times to me for emotional support. I truly believe this nurse has answered the call to care for others. His compassion for my wife was abundant and I will be truly grateful to him. May my wife rest in peace knowing how well she was cared for.”
An excellent example of the “over and above” attitude Stuart exhibits toward patients in his care is reflected in his purchase of nail files and a patient’s favorite nail polish. Following a night shift the previous night, Stuart returned to the hospital the following day in order to give his dear patient a complete manicure. She was thrilled that Stuart would do this for her in her time of need.
Not only does Stuart show genuine concern for his patients, he also cares for his co-workers. Members of his team have remarked that Stuart “is very helpful when needed and is always looking out for others.” They say he shows compassion for his patients and always has a smile on his face.” One of his teammates stated, “I wish we had more Stuarts.”
Even as a young child, Stuart displayed the principles of kindness and sympathy. A school teacher recalled a challenging student with whom others did not want to work. On multiple occasions, young Stuart volunteered to work with the student. Stuart’s teacher recalled him very fondly and said, “I had no doubt at that early age that God had great plans for his life. I am confident that he is and will continue to be a wonderful nurse always seeking God’s leadership in his life.”
