High Fiber Diet

Purpose/Indications

To aid management of constipation, irritable colon, diabetes mellitus, diverticulosis, high serum cholesterol.

General Guidelines

Recommended fiber intake - 25-30 grams/day
Drink plenty of fluids - 6-8 cups of water per day
Increase dietary fiber gradually.
Fiber is obtained primarily through whole grain breads and cereals, fruits and vegetables.

Fiber-containing foods

Breads and cereals made with whole grains or bran.
Raw fruits and vegetables
Dried beans, peas and lentils
Nuts and seeds
Popcorn
Dried fruit
