Baptist Madison Campus

Baptist Cancer Services is proud to serve as the title sponsor for this year's "Run From the Sun," benefitting the Leonard E. Warren Melanoma Foundation.

As a local Christian healing ministry, Baptist seeks to support groups whose mission matches our own: to work within our community to lessen the impact of disease and improve the health status of the people we serve. Through "Run From the Sun," the Leonard E. Warren Melanoma Foundation is providing local education and screening to prevent skin cancers, while raising funds and awareness to support research for a cure. Baptist is proud to be a part of their efforts.

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer of the skin is by far the most common of all cancers. Melanoma accounts for less than 5% of skin cancer cases but causes a large majority of skin cancer deaths. The incidence rates for melanoma have been increasing for at least 30 years. Unlike many other common cancers, melanoma has a wide age distribution. It occurs in younger as well as older people. Melanoma is not uncommon even among those younger than 30. In fact, it is one of the more common cancers in young adults.

Baptist's Team Captain for the Run From The Sun®, Chris Vaughn, is inspired to recruit as many Baptist employees as he possibly can to participate in this year's race. A melanoma survivor himself, this is his second year to be our team captain. Here is his story:

I have been looking forward to Run From The Sun since I finished the race for the first time last year. After being involved last year with the Baptist team and seeing all the good things that go on, how could someone not want to help? This event is also very important to me for another reason. I am a 5-year survivor as of 10-17-11, and am still fighting this terrible disease today. As I sit here and think of what drives me toward this event , I am reminded of a verse that has stuck with me since going through this stage in my life. It is taken from James 1:2 (MSG)
"Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides."

Most people may think that is a strange verse considering the circumstance, but it truly is not. Since being diagnosed with melanoma I have been blessed to tell more than my fair share of people about my situation. I love to talk and encourage people that are facing this dreaded disease and to let them know that through events like this GOD's wisdom to mankind may one day lead to a cure.
