Peripheral Artery Disease

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a condition in which blockages occur in blood vessels that are not part of the heart or brain. In most cases, these blockages are caused by the build up of fatty deposits, or placque. A person diagnosed with PAD is also at higher risk for coronary artery disease. :: Click here to learn more about peripheral artery disease.

Baptist provides a number of diagnostic tests to identify PAD. These include vascular ultrasound, doppler analysis, treadmill stress test, and angiography.

To treat PAD, patients at Baptist may receive catheterization with balloon angioplasty and stenting. Other surgical options include endarterectomy, in which the blocked area of the blood vessel is removed, or bypass, in which a graft in placed in the artery to divert blood flow around the blocked area.
