It’s All About Living
At Baptist Cancer Services, our vision for cancer care was developed by talking to patients, families, caregivers and cancer survivors. We asked them to tell us about their experiences and what they need to help them through the process. Their answers to these questions have become the focus of the Campaign for Baptist Cancer Services. Our goal is to put into place any and all services that will help our patients and their families have the best possible quality of life.
To help raise funds for the Campaign, President George H. W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, joined Baptist on May 5, 2003 for a luncheon and a tour of the Hederman Cancer Center. :: See photos from the day here.
The Cancer Services Lodge
In some cases, cancer treatment can require daily chemotherapy lasting anywhere from six to eight hours. For people who live near Baptist Medical Center this can be difficult enough. But for those who live out of town, it can make an already daunting task seem overwhelming. Baptist Cancer Services treats patients from 71 out of Mississippi's 82 counties. These outpatients may drive two to three hours each way every day for weeks. The Cancer Services Lodge will give them and their families convenient, comfortable, private accommodations within walking distance of Baptist, allowing them to undergo daily cancer treatment without the added difficulty of commuting. Transportation Services
Even for those cancer patients whose treatments do not require overnight stays, the mere task of arranging transportation for treatment can be an enormous burden. Family members may have difficulty in being away from work to provide transportation, and patients may be too weak to drive themselves. The Transporter will provide roundtrip transportation within a 60-mile radius of the greater Jackson area between Baptist and the homes of cancer patients. For cancer patients who provide their own transportation to Baptist, valet parking will be provided. The Serenity Garden
For cancer patients and their families, it would not be unusual to spend between six and eight hours a day at the Center during treatment. The Serenity Garden, located directly outside the Hederman Cancer Center, offers private, secluded area where they can enjoy peace and quiet, fresh air and a place to "escape." The Serenity Garden features winding pathways and comfortable seating near a water fountain where patients and their families can relax to the sounds of trickling water. State-of-the-Art Technology
Since 1946, when Baptist offered the first cobalt machine for deep X-ray treatments south of the Ohio River, Baptist has consistently demonstrated its commitment to acquire the latest technology for the treatment of cancer patients. In 2002, Baptist was the first hospital in the Southeast to acquire a PET/CT scanner, seen by many as the most important advancement in cancer detection created in decades. Advanced technology is costly. But when better technology means earlier detection, and earlier detection means a better prognosis, this commitment must be kept.
