Specialized Minimally Invasive Surgical Procedures at Baptist :: Request a referral to a surgeon at Baptist. Minimally invasive surgeries are procedures performed through small “ports” rather than through the large incisions of “open” surgery. Instead of creating a large incision in which to see the portion of the anatomy being treated, during minimally invasive surgery physicians create a few small incisions--usually no larger than a coin--through which they insert specialized telescoping surgical equipment that contains a tiny camera and a light. The image from the camera is displayed on a television monitor to allow the surgeon to see the internal anatomy. The surgeon also uses other specialized equipment passed through these small incisions to perform the procedure. Minimally invasive surgery may offer a number of advantages for patients, including: Certain procedures that formerly required open surgery are now possible as minimally invasive procedures through the use of robotic technology. Baptist offers the da Vinci Surgical System,™ robotic equipment that magnifies the surgical field up to 10 times the actual size. Baptist Medical Center has Mississippi’s only da Vinci system. Baptist also provides “knifeless surgery” through the CyberKnife® Stereotactic Radiotherapy System. The system is particularly useful for eradicating tiny tumors in the brain and spine. Baptist has the only CyberKnife in a four-state area. Physicians on staff at Baptist perform a number of specialized minimally invasive procedures for a range of conditions throughout the body.
