Physical and Occupational Therapy

Physical Therapy
Baptist's Physical Therapy Department provides both inpatient and outpatient services to the central Mississippi region. We have facilities located in Jackson, Byram, Clinton, Pearl, and Madison. Our staff provides rehabilitation services to patients of all ages.

Treatment is based on four principles: pain reduction, neurological rehabilitation, improvement of range of motion, and increased strength. Therapists work with patients and their families to educate them on prevention and to help achieve their therapy goals.

Patients include accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions such as low back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries and cerebral palsy.

Occupational Therapy
Baptist provides occupational therapy on both an inpatient and outpatient basis to those in need of their services. The population includes, but is not limited to, neurological, orthopedic, arthritis, and respiratory patients. The primary focus of occupational therapy is to improve the functional abilities of a person to enable them to perform activities of daily living.

They not only help patients improve daily functions and reasoning abilities, but also compensate for loss of function. Their goal is to help clients have independent, productive and satisfying lives. They assist patients in performing activities of all types, ranging from using a computer, to caring for daily needs such as dressing, cooking and eating.

Services include the following:
• Activities of daily living (eating, grooming, dressing, bathing, etc.)
• Upper extremity rehab (motion, endurance, strength, functional use)
• Cognitive retraining/visual perceptual retraining
• Postural mechanism retraining
• Adaptive equipment recommendations
• Upper extremity splinting
• Patient/family education/home program

Speech Therapy
Speech therapy is provided on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Speech therapists assess, treat and help to prevent disorders related to speech, language, cognitive communication, voice, swallowing and fluency. They work with people  who cannot make speech sounds, or cannot make them clearly; those with speech rhythm and fluency problems, such as stuttering; people with voice quality problems, such as inappropriate pitch or harsh voice; those with problems understanding and producing language; and those with cognitive communication impairments, such as attention, memory and problem-solving disorders. They may also work with people who have oral motor problems causing eating and swallowing difficulties.
