Lung Basic If you are at least 40 years of age, a smoker, a former smoker within the last five years, or someone concerned about exposure to second-hand smoke, this screening is for you. Only $25, Lung Basic screening is conducted by a licensed respiratory therapist. During the screening, participants undergo a simple, non-invasive test in which they blow into a device called a spirometer. The spirometer measures the volume of air that can be forcefully exhaled. A participant's results are compared to norms based on age, sex, height, weight and ethnicity. The respiratory therapist will provide immediate feedback on the results of the spirometry test. Based on those results, the respiratory therapist will offer educational material and/or referrals to other healthcare providers or community resources. This screening is offered in the Respiratory Services Department located on the first floor of Baptist Medical Center.
