The Geropsychiatric Program
For seniors suffering from depression, anxiety, grief or other problems associated with mental illness, Baptist Behavioral Health Services has an inpatient Geropsychiatric Program designed to address their specific needs.

The unit, located on Unit 5A in Baptist Medical Center, is within a secured area, accessible by keypad entry. All meals and therapy are provided to patients within the unit. Medicare and most major health plans provide coverage.

For short term admission, a person must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Be cognitively capable of benefiting from therapy, unless he or she has been admitted for diagnostic/medication evaluation
  • Be able to attend group sessions
  • Be medically stable
  • Exhibit an abrupt change in behavior
  • Be unable to maintain basic self-care due to a psychiatric condition
  • Show an impaired understanding of reality
  • Exhibit suicidal statements or gestures
  • Exhibit a need for geropsychiatric diagnostic evaluation

Baptist's Geropsychiatric Program provides patients with inpatient treatment seven days a week. Patients see a psychiatrist on a daily basis; family members are invited to attend a multi-disciplinary meeting to plan and evaluate treatment. Occupational and physical therapy are also provided on a consultation basis.

Each patient is given a medical evaluation upon admission into this medically supervised program. The patient's personal physician can follow the patient medically during his or her stay on the unit.

Physicians, healthcare professionals, nursing care facilities or agencies or family members may make referrals to the unit.

The Adult Partial Hospitalization Program
For patients with mental and emotional disorders who need help managing their problems but do not require full time hospitalization, Baptist Behavioral Health Services has an Adult Partial Hospitalization Program designed to address the specific needs of patients 18 years of age and older.

The Partial Hospitalization Program is a short term ambulatory active treatment program that offers structured, therapeutic, intensive clinical services Monday through Friday.

Adult Partial Hospitalization Program services include:
• Psychiatric Assessment
• Nursing Assessment
• Nutritional Assessment
• Process Group Therapy
• Psychoeducational Groups
• Activity Therapy

The program provides a multi-disciplinary approach to psychiatric treatment on an outpatient basis. The professional staff consists of a psychiatrist, a registered nurse, a licensed certified social worker and an activity director.

Thorough assessments are performed by each team member to include the medical, mental, developmental, social, spiritual, ethnic, and educational vocational aspects of each patient. The treatment team meets on a weekly basis to develop each patient's plan of care and to modify it as necessary. Patients are involved in the development of their treatment plans.

Admissions Process
Patients can be referred to Baptist's Adult Partial Hospitalization Program by a family physician or other professionals. A family member or the patient can also request an assessment for possible admission. After completion of an initial assessment, the social worker or registered nurse will make recommendations, with written consent of the patient. The primary physician will be notified of the patient's progress on a regular basis while the patient is in the program. A discharge summary will also be sent to the primary physician after discharge upon request.

Patient admission to the program must be on a voluntary basis. Daily hours are 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. The location is 800 Carlisle Street in Jackson. Patients can register daily between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Patients will be expected to attend all scheduled groups. Lunch will be provided.

138 Days With Alpha
138 Days with Alpha , a project of the Alpha Association Aftercare Committee, consists of 138 meditations written by patients and former patients from the Alcohol and Drug Program and the Family Program, Baptist Chemical Dependency Center staff and Alpha members.

The participants were asked to look at their recovery journey and write on any subject that held a special meaning to them. The Alpha meditation book was dedicated to Mary Ross, also known as "Miss Mary," a former therapist, aftercare facilitator and retired director of Baptist Chemical Dependency Center.

"Alpha is very pleased with the results of this project," said June Dumas. "It gives us insight into the recovery journey of many of our clients." To order a book, call 601-968-1102.

The Alpha Association is made up of former patients of the Baptist Chemical Dependency Center. The association provides valuable services such as conducting the After Care Program, providing people to conduct in-house AA meetings, driving patients to outside AA meetings, operating a canteen for patients, organizing social events, as well as working closely with the CDC staff to help find ways to improve the treatment process. :: back to top
