What the Healthgrades Ratings Mean

As America's leading independent healthcare ratings organization, the Healthgrades rating method offers a uniquely objective and comprehensive overview of hospital services. Healthgrades does all the following: 

• evaluates the performance of approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide on risk-adjusted mortality and complications rates for nearly 30 of the most common conditions treated and procedures.

• independently measures hospitals based on data that hospitals submit to the federal government. No hospital can opt in or out of the analysis, and no hospital pays to be measured. 

• risk adjusts for patient demographic characteristics and clinical risk factors, thereby taking into account how sick patients are upon admission. 

• bases its analysis solely on objective measures of clinical quality outcomes. Other organizations factor in subjective measures such as reputation or even technologies used at a hospital.

According to the American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2013: Healthgrades Report to the Nation, patients in 5-star rated hospitals had, on average, a 75% lower risk of dying compared to a 1-star rated hospital, and a 61% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital.
