Low Sodium Diet Principles

Purpose:
To aid in the control of high blood pressure, decrease swelling due to water retention and manage diseases of the heart and kidneys.

Sodium is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and is often added to foods to help preserve them and add flavor. The main source of sodium in diets is salt.

General Guidelines:

  • Avoid using salt at the table or in cooking.
  • Limit the use of high sodium condiments such as ketchup, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, pickles.
  • Use fresh or frozen vegetables instead of those canned with salt.
  • Limit intake of salted snack foods such as potato chips, pretzels, and crackers.
  • Be cautious of fast foods and convenience items which are high in sodium.
