High Fiber Diet

Purpose/Indications:
To aid management of constipation, irritable colon, diabetes mellitus, diverticulosis, high serum cholesterol.

General Guidelines:

  • Recommended fiber intake - 25-30 grams/day
  • Drink plenty of fluids - 6-8 cups of water per day
  • Increase dietary fiber gradually.
  • Fiber is obtained primarily through whole grain breads and cereals, fruits and vegetables.

Fiber-containing foods:

  • Breads and cereals made with whole grains or bran.
  • Raw fruits and vegetables
  • Dried beans, peas and lentils
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Popcorn
  • Dried fruit
