Prostascint Scan

What is a Prostascint Scan ?

A Prostascint Scan is used to check for lymph node invasion in men with prostate cancer.

What does a Prostascint Scan Entail?

You must have a negative bone scan prior to scheduling this scan.  You will come in on the first day for an injection of radioactive isotope.  This visit should take about 60 to 90 minutes, due to the need to prepare the medicine and monitor you after the injection.

You will be asked to return 4 - 5 days later for scanning. You must follow strict guidelines of a Fleet enema kit the day before returning for the scans. On day 4 you must have a Foley catheter inserted.  You will have blood drawn, and imaging will begin. Your blood will be tagged with another radioactive isotope and readministered. Imaging will last about 2 hours. That night you should take a mild laxative. You will need to return on day 5 for approximately 45 minutes of imaging. (No catheter will be needed, nor will blood be drawn on this day). Your results will be available in 1 - 3 days, and your doctor will discuss the results with you.
