What is a Lymph Node Scan?

A Lymph Node Scan is used in patients with melanoma to map lymphatic drainage in order to locate lymph nodes.

What does a Lymph Node Scan Entail?

You will lie on a table and receive several injections of radioactive isotope around the melanoma site.  Imaging will begin immediately.  The scan usually takes 45 - 90 minutes.  Markings will be made on your skin to show the location of lymph nodes.   Most patients go to surgery within two hours of the scan.

Is Any Special Preparation Required Before Having a Lymph Node Scan?

No special preparation is required before the study.

How Safe Is This Procedure?

This procedure is very safe, there are usually no side effects.
