El propósito de los exámenes de detección es el diagnóstico y tratamiento oportunos. Por lo general, los exámenes de revisión se realizan a personas sin síntomas, pero que pueden tener un riesgo elevado de padecer ciertas enfermedades o condiciones.

Pautas para la detección

La Asociación Americana del Pulmón y la Sociedad Americana de Cáncer sugieren que si usted cumple con los siguientes criterios, es posible que desee someterse a una prueba de detección:

  • Es fumador o exfumador que lo dejó en los últimos 15 años
  • Tiene 55 a 74 años de edad
  • Tiene antecedentes de haber fumado mucho (p. ej., un paquete por día durante 30 años, dos paquetes por día durante 15 años)

Si cumple con estos criterios, debe utilizarse una tomografía computarizada (TC) de baja dosis para la detección. Una TC es una serie de radiografías que se juntan mediante una computadora para crear imágenes del pulmón. Es posible que esta prueba identifique tumores más pequeños que una radiografía torácica .
