Ridgeland High School Students Acknowledged Contact: Robby Channell, 601-968-5135 rchannell@mbhs.org Jackson, Miss. – June 16, 2008 - Baptist Education Resource Center, a division of Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Miss., hosted a nursing mentorship reception on May 6, 2008, to honor high school students participating in the program. Ten Ridgeland High School seniors spent two days a week for eight weeks shadowing a Baptist nurse and Patient Care Assistants. The Mississippi Office of Nursing Workforce and the Bower Foundation, along with Hinds Community College, work in collaboration to expose high school seniors to the nursing profession. Baptist started participating in this program in 2007 to provide three years of match funding to support the Certified Nursing Assistant Program. Goals of the program are to teach basic knowledge of health care terminology; give an understanding of hospital procedures; provide instruction in providing care and assistance to patients; provide knowledge of specific skills required to pass the Certified Nurse Assistant examination; and give opportunities for personal career evaluation. The next step for the graduating seniors is to complete the certified nursing assistant program at Hinds Community College nursing allied center. Upon completion of the CNA program Baptist hopes to hire all ten of the students. :: Click here to see photos on the community section of Baptist’s website. |
