Jackson, Miss. – May 17, 2006 - Baptist Healthplex in Jackson ranked 26 in the nation and was deemed one of the top aquatic programs this year by the United States Water Fitness Association. Alice Johnson was one of Baptist’s aquatic coordinators awarded “top aquatic director.” The award is designed to encourage the development and recognition of outstanding aquatics and water exercise programs.

“Through teamwork, coordinators pull aquatic programs and staff members together to create a variety of fitness classes specifically to exercise in the water,” Johnson said. “Swimming is good exercise especially for someone who has arthritis, back pain or some other physical problem. The sport, in general, takes stress and pressure off your joints.”

In addition to lanes being marked for lap swimming, Baptist Healthplex has specific programs for those with special exercise needs such as arthritis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, pregnancy, cerebral palsy and preschoolers.

Johnson, who has worked for Baptist for ten years, added, “Swimming uses all the major muscle groups and is a exercise that helps to keep your heart and lungs healthy. It helps to keep your joints flexible, especially in the neck, shoulders and hips as your limbs and body move through the water.”
