Jackson, Miss. – November 15, 2005 - The public is invited to view "Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Woman's Cancer Journey" an international art exhibit from Tuesday, December 6, 2005 - Thursday, December 8, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the lobby of Baptist Cancer Services' Hederman Cancer Center, 1227 North State Street. Twenty to 30 pieces from the collection will be displayed.

Oncology on Canvas began as an international art competition open to women from around the world diagnosed with cancer, their families, and friends, as well as health care professionals involved in their care, to express their struggles and successes in battling this disease through art.

Oncology on Canvas received more than 400 submissions from 23 countries. Eli Lilly and Company presents the exhibit, showcasing hundreds of pieces of art, in partnership with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS).

Twice a year, Baptist Cancer Services hosts a series of art workshops designed to help cancer patients communicate their feelings, tell their stories and experience themselves as unique and creative individuals.

The next series of workshops for art therapy will be January 4 through March 8, 2006 from noon-1:30 p.m. in the Activities Room of the Hederman Cancer Center.

Susan Anand, MA, ATR-BC, LPAT, LMFT, a Registered Art Therapist, Licensed Practicing Art Therapist, and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist leads the workshops.

“The program provides cancer patients an outlet to express feelings, reduce stress, assist in pain management, help build positive coping skills and increase self-discovery and self-awareness,” said Baptist Cancer Services Navigator Linda Swales, RN.

Workshops are free and participants are encouraged, but not required, to attend all workshops. Space is limited, and registration is required. The program includes art supplies.

To register or for more information, call the Baptist Health Line at 1-800-948-6262 or 601-948-6262.
