Jackson, Miss. – September 30, 2005 – In an effort to support October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Baptist Cancer Services encourages the public to drive by the Hederman Cancer Center, 1227 North State Street, on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to pick up a breast cancer awareness information packet.

Those driving by also have a chance to win a Baptist Breast Health Center robe, a piece of Gail Pittman’s Hope Baptist Cancer Services design or a free screening mammogram.

“Participants don’t even have to get out of their car,” said Baptist Breast Health Specialist Mary Ellen Yarbrough, R.N. MSN. “We’ll give them their packets through their car windows. It’s so important to get the word out about monthly breast self-exams and yearly mammograms.”

The first 50 participants will receive a free breast cancer awareness t-shirt. If you can’t come by, log on to the Baptist website at www.mbhs.org. From the website, you can register for prizes and learn more about breast cancer.

“Today, over 2 million women in the US have been treated for breast cancer with a five year relative survival rate for localized breast cancer increasing from 72% in 1940s to 97% today,” Yarbrough added.

In 2005, an estimated 2,350 Mississippians will be diagnosed with breast cancer and an estimated 450 will die from breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
