Baptist Offers Art Therapy to Cancer Patients

Jackson, Miss. - August 18, 2003 -- Baptist Cancer Services is now accepting registration for free Art Therapy classes for people battling cancer. The weekly classes will be held at noon from September 17 through November 19 at the Hederman Cancer Center in Jackson, Miss.

Susan Anand will be leading the classes. Anand is a Registered Art Therapist, Licensed Practicing Art Therapist, and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

"Art therapy is a tool that helps provide an outlet needed to express feelings and open communication," says Linda Swales, registered nurse and navigator at the Hederman Cancer Center. "It also reduces stress, assists in pain management, helps build positive coping skills and increases self-awareness as well as self discovery. At least for a moment in time, it removes the families and patients from the demands of their treatment and allows them to be themselves."

For more information about the Art Therapy classes or to pre-register, please call the Baptist Health line at 601-948-6262 or 1-800-948-6262. Space is limited, and registration is required.
